Three Reasons to Get a Second Opinion When Told to Get a Hysterectomy

Symptoms of fibroids in uterus

One of the most common uterine fibroid treatments is the hysterectomy, which is a problem for more than a few reasons. If your doctor suggests you undergo this uterine fibroid surgery, you should probably get a second opinion and consider other uterine fibroids treatment options. Here are a few reasons why.

It’s an Extreme Option.

A hysterectomy surgery removes the uterus, and is the only guaranteed effective way to eliminate the problem of fibroids. Without the uterus, there is no place for fibroids to develop, and cause problems. For many women, this can be devastating, because they obviously will no longer be able to have children.

There Are Several Other Fibroid Treatments Out There.

Although the hysterectomy may be one of the most effective fibroid treatments out there, it’s not the only one. There are plenty of other fibroid treatments that can effectively eliminate all the fibroids, and just the fibroids. For women whose symptoms are mild, there are medicinal fibroid treatments that can help manage symptoms. For women whose symptoms are a bit more tough, there are non-invasive fibroid treatments that can eliminate the fibroids without removing the uterus, while also allowing for a fast recovery time.

Too Many Hysterectomies Are Performed Needlessly.

A recent study came out that revealed too many doctors have been advising hysterectomy surgeries needlessly. Researchers at the University of Michigan found that of the nearly 3,400 women in the study, nearly 20% — one in five — didn’t have to have a hysterectomy. Worse, doctors never told patients about alternative uterus fibroids treatments or other procedures in about 40% of the cases.

Basically, you should get a second opinion if told you need a hysterectomy. It could save your uterus. If you have any questions about fibroid treatments, feel free to share in the comments.
